Open Source Software Mirror At OSCC MAMPU

We just upgrade our Internet line to 8MB and now we have all the bandwidth that we need for mirror. The mirror website can be access by

http://mirror.oscc.org.my/

8MB Internet line is small compare to other mirror sites around the world. What can we say, the Internet fee for lease line still expensive. Too expensive. It cost OSCC MAMPU a bomb just to provided this service to goverment agencies.

With this mirror, we hope Malaysia goverment agencies will be feeling much more secure to install and update open source software. This mirror is located in Cyberjaya Malaysia, premises and hardware are owned by MAMPU.

OSCC Tech and RnD, are going to write RPM or DEB package and HOWTO, so pointing to OSCC MAMPU mirror should be much more easier.

need help from community to guide us to write RPM or DEB and HOWTO.

For Centos I just run rpm2html script to produce this page

That all for now.

Trip To Miri Sarawak Malaysia

OSCC MAMPU is going to Miri Sarawak for OSS Acccelerated Adoption Seminar 2008. I'm bringing along OpenOffice.org and Ubuntu CD's to be distributed during the seminar.

We are not suppose to be in favor of any types of open source softwares.

Ubuntu and OpenOffice.org at this time, are much more easier
to carry, distribute and duplicated.

If any vendor want us to distribute any open source softwares it's can be discuss with OSCC MAMPU. It's is much better for the vendors to come along with us during seminar road show. The vendors demo and show your products by your own words.

Openoffice.org is going to be one of the largest open source installation in the goverment of Malaysia. We are going to save a lot of money and it's can be used to help Malaysia ICT industry.

Desktop Linux is our next move. RnD OSCC MAMPU is already gearing up preparing all the needed tools and applications for the Desktop Migration.

Offline Web Application

Last morning (6 June 2008) we had a meeting with one of the department under one of important ministry. This is a technical meeting, we are trying to understand a very important application that still running for more than 10 years. It's base on Microsoft Access. The scale of this application is huge. nearly 10,000 sites using it.

The business logic and the work flow of this application is too complicated. For more than 10 years, it's been improved and modify and to tell the truth, to migrate this application it's going to be difficult without proper understand of the whole application and it's social network. :)

Gathering data is decentralize and data repository and proccessing is centralize.

I'm really impress what I called the line of communication and how they organize the workflow because it's cover 10,000 sites nation wide. This application create a large social network due to the nature of the information needed.

To our surprise, the department already start to migrate the application into a L/WAMP. Linux or Windows, Apache, Mysql and PHP base application. From our review, the new application is ready.

The only problem that they share with us, some of the sites, do not have Internet access. After discussion with number of things that could not be cater, we come out with a suggestion.

To use xampp from Apache Friends Project.

http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.html

With Xampp, the new web application can be install offline in the local computer at the site. The data will be keying and updates and data will be send by offline mode like floppy disk, CD and thumb drive.

They love the idea, the current work flow is using offline mode of sending the data for the sites that do not have Internet access. It's matter of installing and training the new application.

Just to let all of you know. The commitment to move to Open Source solutions is high in the Malaysia government agencies. This is my personal observation after meeting with agencies.

The only obstacle is the technical aspect of the implementation and the bad experiences spending money to companies that do not deliver, this cover to all type solution, infra, open and close sources.

En. Marzuki of OSCC MAMPU is planning the way to bride the agencies and Industry and I hope, the Industry will give suggestions, comments and commitment.

We are in the chicken and egg situation. Which is should come in first. Agencies are waiting the commitment from the industry and the industry is waiting for the agencies to make the move.

OSCC Participation In Malaysian Budget 2008 Web Server Preparation For Ministry Of Finance

OSCC Participation In Malaysian Budget 2008 Web Server Preparation For Ministry Of Finance

This document is designed to provide detailed report of all exercises done by OSCC during their participation in preparing a dedicated web server for the Budget 2008 presentation day conducted by the Ministry Of Finance (MOF).

Due to a massive visitor access spike projected during the budget day, OSCC team has been assigned to propose, set up and maintain a web server infrastructure solution based on Open Source technology that is reliable to handle the visitor surge, secure and cost saving. This solution is meant to replace the solution adopted by MOF for the past years that are too expensive and complex.

The solution provided by OSCC has successfully performs reliably and receives more than 130,000 page views without any problem. The solution also saves MOF a huge amount of money as it eliminates the need of expensive hardwares and it only uses free Open Source softwares.

All activities, findings and information will be presented in detail within this report which will be used as source of reference for similar implementation in the future.
